:: Community Information Centres ::

With a view to bring the information technology at the door steps of the rural poor, the government embarked upon a project to provide computer facility and internet access in each block. The state Government took a prudent decision to incorporate the provision of construction of Community Information Centre (CIC) building in each block under Hon’ble PM’s Package. Almost all the buildings have been completed and most of the CICs are running in the new buildings.

General computer equipment in these CICs include one server, 5 clients, 1 laser printer, 1 dot matrix printer, a webcam, microphones / speakers, UPS, generator. The internet connectivity is provided through VSAT connection. The technical affairs of CIC are looked after by 2 CIC operators engaged on contractual basis. User affairs are being regulated by a user committee headed by the concerned Block Development Officer.

The availability of information technology access in each block has started to achieve the desired result of dissemination of information. Various computer courses are being conducted at nominal rates. Download facility of internet documents is being extended at vary low rates. We are hopeful that in near future, farmers ,artisans and other strata of rural society will gainfully reap the benefits of Information Technology and the setting up of CICs shall go a long way to reduce the intellectual gap between the urban and the rural in the realm of computer technology.
